Calgary Construction Association President and COO Bill Black Awarded Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal

February 2, 2023- The Calgary Construction Association is thrilled to recognize President and COO Bill Black for being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal! Nominated by his fellow Albertans, recipients of the medal are recognized for their significant contributions to the province.

William (Bill) Black has been involved in the design and construction industry for over 40 years in various roles and industry segments. Since 2018, he has served as the President of the Calgary Construction Association (CCA), diligently representing Calgary and Southern Alberta’s construction industry. Through his work with the CCA, Bill has made a tremendous impact and contribution to Calgary, Alberta, and Canada.

Formed in 1943, the Calgary Construction Association is a professional association of over 850 member companies throughout the Calgary region. Through partnerships with the residential and commercial construction industry, the Association represents over 80,000 Calgarians and their families. As an industry association for the construction sector, the goal of the organization is to help its members thrive now and into the future, under the motto of “engaging our community to build better”.

Through his diverse network of industry practitioners and thought leaders, Bill is a fixture in the Calgary construction community and the industry at large.  Bill is known for his ability to take all situations in stride and uses his experience, and built-in resilience to motivate others to take on challenges through great teamwork and a strong focus on culture and values. Viewing humour as a powerful way to engage others, Bill is hands-on and energetic in his approach and communication style. As a leader, his goal is to help others find their true fit within their career path through a sense of team-based achievement, purpose and mastery.

While representing the CCA, Bill has advocated for the construction industry at all three levels of government on issues regarding the construction industry. In 2020-21, Bill was instrumental in getting together industry leaders and drafting the “Pandemic Planning for the Construction Industry” document in conjunction with the Alberta Construction Association. This document laid down the foundation for how the construction industry could respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic by suggesting policies and procedures around worker safety while maintaining the place of the construction industry in the Alberta economy.

Bill has been active in working with the City of Calgary in responding to the City’s Climate Emergency declaration and subsequent formation of green policy in and around City-building projects and construction. Recently, his voice has been instrumental in addressing the issue of labour shortages in the construction industry, while offering suggestions to all three levels of government on how best to address the issue in Alberta.
