New Program Announcement: Ballad Group’s WERC Program Launches in Calgary

Ballad’s Workforce Employment Readiness and Connections (WERC) program is an industry-tested workforce solution designed to connect construction employers with trained, job-ready talent across Alberta.
Ballad delivers simulated worksite training in partnership with the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services (ALSS). What began as a single-site model has grown into seven simulated worksites across the province, reflecting both the strength of the model and sustained provincial investment in its outcomes.
WERC supports unemployed and underemployed Albertans facing barriers to employment, helping them build resilience and long-term attachment to the workforce. Each year, more than 1,000 participants gain hands-on experience, earn industry-recognized certifications, and successfully transition into employment.
In Calgary, WERC offers immersive, hands-on training in construction and carpentry within a simulated worksite designed to mirror real job conditions. Participants enter on a rolling basis and typically train for 12 weeks, following customized pathways aligned with their career goals and current employer demand. Alongside technical training, participants complete safety certifications, earn industry tickets, and develop essential workplace skills such as communication, reliability, and teamwork.
What sets WERC apart is its direct alignment with industry needs. Employers are not just partners; they actively help shape training to reflect real job site expectations. This ensures participants are not only trained, but ready to contribute from day one.
Ballad’s model consistently supports participants in securing employment and staying connected to the workforce, contributing to stronger retention and more stable career pathways over time. Across WERC programs, 82% of participants who secure employment remain employed after 90 days.
“Ballad truly exceeded my expectations going into the program. Through the hands-on experience and helping me get my tickets, I’ve now reached goals I never thought I would.” – WERC Program Graduate
For employers, WERC provides a direct pipeline to emerging talent trained in a job-relevant environment. Participants arrive with practical experience, certifications, and a strong understanding of workplace expectations, reducing onboarding time and supporting early retention.
At Ballad, we believe strong employer partnerships are key to creating meaningful employment opportunities. Employers can engage in a range of ways, including hosting site tours, offering paid work experiences, contributing equipment, or helping co-design training. Most importantly, they gain access to a pool of motivated, job-ready candidates prepared to enter and grow within the construction industry.
