Calgary Construction Association Joins Forces with City of Calgary and Alberta Ecotrust to Propel Emissions-Neutral Buildings Information Exchange Initiative

CALGARY, Feb. 28, 2024 – The Calgary Construction Association (CCA) is pleased to collaborate with the City of Calgary and Alberta Ecotrust Foundation to advance emissions-neutral buildings in Calgary. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to foster sustainability and innovation within the construction industry.

Professionals in Calgary’s building, construction, and renovation sectors unite to create the Emissions-Neutral Buildings Information Exchange (ENBIX) Calgary Community of Practice. This initiative facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration aimed at reducing emissions from buildings across the region.

For years, the Calgary Construction Association has actively advocated on the establishment of an emissions-neutral building exchange in Calgary. Fundamentally, the Association believes that a community of practice led by the building industry is critical to assess what emissions-efficient solutions in the built-form are realistically achievable in the Calgary context. This will also enable accelerated learning through the sharing of best practices and accumulated knowledge that can be made available across industry stakeholders.

“The launch of the ENBIX Calgary Community of Practice marks a pivotal moment in our industry’s commitment to high performance buildings, especially in terms of utilizing the deep technical expertise in our industry to construct buildings that realize long-term effective energy consumption, reduced carbon footprint, wellness, durability and value” says Bill Black, President and Chief Operating Officer, Calgary Construction Association. “By focusing on realistic solutions, and through collaboration and knowledge sharing, the leaders in our construction industry are taking proactive steps to construct a more sustainable greener, cleaner future for Calgary and support the owners and end users that are seeking to achieve this level of performance.

“The greatest opportunity to achieve greenhouse gas reductions is through our buildings,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “ENBIX is an investment in Calgary-made solutions, building capacity and momentum for emissions-neutral construction that will grow in the years ahead.”

The ENBIX Calgary Community of Practice serves as a platform for ongoing collaboration between government entities and local industry professionals. It aims to accelerate the transition to an emissions-neutral built environment for both new and existing buildings across Alberta. Led by Alberta Ecotrust, ENBIX launched in December 2023, and the establishment of the Calgary Community of Practice marks a significant step forward in this endeavor.

Andrea Linsky, Emissions-Neutral Buildings Director at Alberta Ecotrust Foundation and ENBIX Team Lead, highlights the importance of industry collaboration, stating, “ENBIX is here to work with the building industry to identify Calgary-specific challenges and opportunities for emissions-neutral buildings, overcome barriers, foster innovation and share success stories.”

Recognizing the significant contribution of buildings to greenhouse gas emissions, ENBIX aims to expand its outreach. Through various initiatives such as webinars, site visits, technology demonstrations, and training sessions, ENBIX will continue to share market research, industry experience, and training opportunities.
