Varcoe: What’s the answer to decrepit office buildings in Calgary? Knock them down

via Calgary Herald by Chris Varcoe The city will offer grants to approved property owners to tear down ‘inefficient and end-of-life buildings that negatively impact downtown vibrancy’ The city aims to accelerate the removal of up to 200,000 square feet of vacant office space in Calgary. Darren Makowichuk/Postmedia Calgary has a partial solution to the problem of decrepit downtown office buildings languishing in the city’s core. Knock ’em down. It seems like a counterintuitive suggestion: blow something up to make things better. A special thank you to all our members who attended, and to Chandos Construction, Ledcor and PCL Construction for sponsoring the event. It is essential that we advocate for our industry by...

Written by Ryan M. Morstad, Law Student Email: rmorstad@gfslaw.ca   It’s the middle of Winter and you, as the General Contractor, get a call from the owner of your newly constructed condominium building in the middle of the night. You call your plumbing sub-contractor; however, they have an “out of office” set stating that they will not be returning for 5 days. What...
