Calgary Construction at City Council’s marathon meeting on the housing and affordability task force recommendations
Last week, our director of government affairs, Frano Cavar, represented the Calgary Construction Association at City Council’s marathon meeting on the housing and affordability task force recommendations. We believe that the recommendations are an important first step in addressing how we build Calgary forward, and ensure housing affordability – which is rapidly evaporating. We also raised the issue of the labour shortage. As it currently stands, our research indicates that there is as many as 4,000 construction vacancies in Calgary right now. Nationally, that number is as high as 80,000 – and Calgary is competing for talent with every jurisdiction in Canada. What happens when you don’t have the workers to build the infrastructure in homes that you need? Costs increase, projects are delayed and affordability tanks.
