Calgary Construction Association Reaffirms Support for Calgary’s Housing Strategy, Calls for Bolstered Public Engagement Policies

Calgary, AB– The Calgary Construction Association reaffirms its support of Calgary’s Housing Strategy, and the various mechanisms the City is employing to manage Calgary’s future growth and provide affordable housing options for Calgarians.

We recognize that should the City of Calgary proceed with its Municipal Development Plan goal of 50 percent growth in existing communities, rezoning is inevitable. Moreover, according to the City of Calgary’s own data, 95 percent of R-CG applications receive approval: therefore, the existing land-use designation process is both ineffective, costly of time and resources, and performative.

However, we also recognize the contention the “rezoning” conversation has caused our communities. We have heard concerns about parking, height, and setbacks. Should the rezoning bylaw pass, we call on Calgary City Council to direct City Administration to establish clear, standardized guidelines of public engagement and input required for the various build forms enabled by R-CG zoning, inline with its own Engage policy.  As stated in September, we trust the professionals of the planning and development department to work with the community, do their due diligence, and adequately and contextually apply the principles of planning.

Most critically – the Calgary Construction Association fundamentally believes that any new policies and procedures are moot without further action on the skilled labour gap. According to data analyzed by Alberta Jobs, Economy and Trade, there were 7,560 construction trades and management job vacancies in the Calgary economic region in Q3 2023, representing a staggering one-quarter of all job vacancies (30,500) in the city. Further action is required by all levels of government to ensure that we have the skilled labour supply to meet the needs of our growing City.
